B/W photograph of the northeast corner of North Main Street and East Colfax Avenue, South Bend, Indiana. The building pictured is the office of Dr. D.E. Cummins, dentist. There is a typed information note attached to the back of this photograph: The building on the corner was erected by Dr. D.E. Cummins, who in early days was one of South Bend's principal dentists and it was known as the Cummins building. It was removed in later years and replaced by the building which is on the site at present (1941). The first block of buildings on the right was known as the Ginz block. Owing to the character of some of its occupants, some of whom were of an immoral type, the block became known as "poverty row." The building from which projects the job printing sign was used in an early day as a hotel and was known as the St. Joe hotel. This name should not be confused with a St. Joe hotel which once occupied a part of the site of the present (1941) Oliver hotel. The three story brick building on the extreme corner at the right was the Brownfield building. The lower floor was used as a store by John Brownfield, one of the most Christian men who ever lived in the city. He operated a dry goods store and in an earlier day bought and sold wool, farmers bringing their wool to him and unloading it onto a platform in front of a brick building back or west of the three story building. 1894 ca. |
