PP 80b March 30, 1858 Evelyn Colfax to Ann Heaton / Personal 23.119 Page One (Written at the very top of page one - Please accept the enclosed little book. It has done me a great deal of good, I hope it may you.) (Written on the left side vertically - Would be happy to hear from you) Washington, D.C. March 30th, 1858. My dear Mrs. Heaton. I went to prayer meeting this morning at 10 o'clock & when I returned what should I see standing on our table but two bottles of wine, one bottle of cherries, two beautiful frosted cakes & four - no three doughnuts (my husband had eaten the fourth one) all the way from South Bend, and put up by you & Mary & Mrs. Heaton. O but did not I bless my kind friends at home? did n't I laugh outright at Mary's doughnuts? & did n't I eat one right up & put the others away Page Two for lunch to-morrow? did n't my eyes sparkle when they saw the wine & cherries? & did not my mouth water when I saw those beautiful cakes? The only answer to all those questions is-to-use one of our elegant western phases - well they did. And I thought as I looked at them - well - nobody would take so much trouble for me but Mrs. Heaton and I do thank you more than this pen can express & Mrs. Heaton also for sending it to us & Mary for the doughnuts. Any if you were here & boarding the way we are & found fish bones in the rice and soap in the hash - (well I won't go any farther) - you would realize how pleasant it is to eat something out know is clean and made by those Page Three you know are clean people. Every time I taste your wine or cake I shall remember who made it & every time I treat a friend to it I'll tell them who made it & sent it to me. But now I fear we have got our cake & wine & Charley has not got his appointment - & that would not be fair for him to lose his chance as Midshipman after we have got the cake - you should not have sent it until he had his appointment. I suppose Mr. Colfax wrote Mr. Heaton all about it - that there is danger of not getting it, so I need not say anything on the subject. I have been sick for two weeks past with Influenza - was confined to the house for two weeks - it is only two or three days since I've been out again. Page Four Stamped in black middle top of pageNO INDIANA HISTORICAL SOCIETY 112 So. Lafayette Blvd South Bend, Indiana 46601 Written in pencil in upper right corner top of page162-47 23.119 PP80 A-B You have heard of the ??? that has been going on east, all winter & is extending all over the United States. It has come here & for three or four weeks prayer meetings have been held daily in different parts of the city. How I wish it would extend to South Bend also. I do think an outpouring of the Spirit of God is needed there as much as anywhere. I fear I, as well as other Christians, have not lived as near to Christ nor set as good example as I should do & I hope, if my life is spared to go home, that by his grace assisting me to be able to live a more blameless life & give no reason for any to speak evil of me as I fear I did last summer. I am told Mr. Evans has turned backbiter & is saying all the evil he can of all of use poor Dutch. Poor man! I pity & forgive him & pray he may see his own sins as plain as he does mine. I have written out a long letter - longer than I expected when I commenced. Tell Mary if I do not write to her in time to send with this, I will do so in a few days. With kind remembrance to Mrs. Heaton, Charley & Mary. I am yours truly E.E. Colfax Transcribed by Linda C. Deaton 7/2022 |
