PP 68 1856 Colfax to Heaton Sr. / Districts, correspondence in register Page One (1856) Renselaer Sunday Morning Dear Squire, Prospects are looking very fair in this part of the Dist. In this Co., where I was beaten by 16 votes in 1854, the excitement certainly exceeds that of any other Co. I have been in and they promise me 200 maj. I fear we shall not be able to pull our former maj. in Miami, in consequence of foreign importations; but we shall gain in Fulton, Marshall, Stark, Jasper, Benton & probably Cass & White also. I have just read this weeks Register & regret very much that that correspondence was not published as I requested without any boasting - for first Stuart has improved wonderfully in the joint canvas & does very well indeed - & secondly, as the article embodies correspondence which could be alone in my possession or furnished by me. I will of course be charged with having written it or having procured it to be written. But, of course it is too late now crying over spilt milk. Stuart has encouraging advice from his friends in So. Joe for he claimed in Benton that he would bear me there. He won't do that; but I fear he will reduce my maj, decidedly, which will look bad. Yours ever Schuyler Written in the left margin vertically I receive letters from many friends; but it is utterly impossible to find time to answer them. Please excuse me to that capital friend John F. Miller Transcribed by Linda C. Deaton 11/2022 |
