PP 50 February 24, 1856 Colfax to C. Heaton/Congressional 23.119 Page One Washn City, Feb 24, 1856 Dear Squire, I have been trying to find time to write you a long letter, but you cannot imagine how hurried I am. Committee on Elections meets nearly every day, which, with other duties, absorbs all my time, & I am some ten cases (at Depts) behind already. Besides, as we were beaten in the House (??? against us) on the former asked by the Committee to send for persons to Kansas, & were instructed to give the reasons, we are preparing, with care, a report giving them all the reasons they will want. And we have also had frequent consultations. Sometimes till 1 o'clock A.M. with Reeder, & have had a messenger go to Kansas to warn the Free State Legislation against making any act of Legislation, which would Page Two give Pierce a pretext for having them arrested for treason. I know you will bear with me while I am so engrossed with work; & will write me the same as ever. I trust you will. Evelyn is suffering very much with neuralgia; but send love to all. In great haste, Yours ever, Schuyler Colfax Transcribed by Linda C. Deaton 8/2022 |
