PP 69 23.119 October 7, 1856 Colfax to Heaton Sr. / Speaking engagements Page One Watermark upper left corner Webster settlement (1856) between Union Mills & Westville Tues morning, Oct 7 Dear Squire, Will you take my dirty shirts out of that canvas bag & have them sent to Mrs. Morgan's to be washed. I have enough other clean clothing, but can't get along without shirts. We had a good time at Union Mills yesterday - a large crowd - & when I concluded, most enthusiastic cheering. I asked Stuart yesterday morning whether he was going to be at New Carlisle. He said certainly he would be there or have a substitute. I told him no substitute would be accepted by me - that it was the only place in the Co. where he had consented to meet me & he must do it. He said if he was well, he would be there sure. I notice that Fitch is advertised to speak at Union Mills Friday, which looks as if Stuart had contracted to have him in this part of the Dist., Thursday, Friday & Saturday. If Banks doesn't speak at South Bend, I hope a good delegation will go from there Page Two to LaPorte to hear him. Never mind my Mish appointment for that day. I will fill it alone easy enough. I suspect Banks has forgotten in which Co. I lived, LaPorte or St. Jos, & selected the former as the most central of the Northern Co., in my Dist. I shall be delighted however, if he has made an appointment for S. Bend on Friday, but I fear not. Stuart & I speak at Mich City tomorrow, Wednesday, - Thursday evening Wier & others speak - Friday a German speech by Schneider of Chicago - Saturday evening Banks speaks there - Monday evening, Dr. Egan (Irish) speaks. And all over the Co. they are having Freemont meetings this week at all the school houses. In this ???, they have 4 speeches this week, one in each school Dist. So, you see, they are doing it up here splendidly - really throwing us in St. Joe in the shack. Yours ever Schuyler Transcribed by Linda C. Deaton 11/2022 |
