PP 220 Jan. 19, 1845 Sample to Colfax / Congressional Matters 2009.3 Page One Top of the page (Private & confidential) Washington 19 Jany 1845 Dr Schuyler I recd yours of the 7th and although this is the 8th letter for this sitting I will write you a line or two - I am on the rack about the subject of your ??? - I fear that delay will ruin us - I am waiting with impatience for Harpers answer to my letter to him on this subject - You are right in your conjectures as to T. Jernigan - Cathcart has on file a very strong letter for him but I can head him I think if I have the liberty, but I have not ventured to ask through another the removal of Harper because he may think & believe he can be returned through his strong recommendations or rather ??? - It ought to retain him but I say distinctly that is will not aid him a hair - Cathcart charges him with being a violent ??? ??? and at the same time vaporing about being the only Tyler Man in town. If this comes to the actual notice of Wickliffe he will be unceremoniously removed - the ??? cause precisely produced the removal of Vigers - I had a promise from Miller the 2nd Ajs P.M.G. that in no instances should action be had upon any applica- Page Two tion for removal in my district without my being notified of it but both Vigers and Salisbury of Valparaiso were removed without any notice being given me other than that the acts were done. From these specimens of their actions no mercy or justice is to be shown us. I do hope (word "are" crossed out) in a day or two to receive Harpers reply to my letter - It is time I had it - If I do not get it soon I will conclude it has miscarried & will act on my own responsibility as I think circumstances may dictate - Unless this matter is soon arranged the opportunity of being gratified in our desires will be lost - I think Willoughby may be appointed now - T.L. Jernigan has not yet arrived yet. I look for him every day - I will watch him closely when he does come - Yesterday McNulty was by a unanimous vote dismissed as clerk & civil & criminal proceedings ordered against him. He is a debased wretch - sunk into the lowest depths of depravity - His poor wife arrived here on Thursday with a young infant which he had never seen before - Texas is yet upon the ??? - I hope we shall conclude (illegible word crossed out) the argument soon - this week probably. Page Three You will have seen my speech in the Intelligencer of the 18th - Please give me out sincere opinion of it & what our folks generally say about it - You know one is always solicitous about his own offspring - I could not discuss it in half its ??? in an hour - I think of publishing it in pamphlet form if I do I will add an appendix of some slavery statistics, etc. Your sincere friend S.
