This is a transcript of the letter: Dear Willie, I rec'd a letter from you by Doct. Allen June 1st, 5 days from there, and as Capt. Hawks is to go back tomorrow, I thought I would write you a few lines...We hear that you are sick, but getting better. I wish you would write how you are and how you have been, for there is a good deal of enquiry about you, for I can assure you that you are not forgotten by the folks in this place. I have rented the Hardware store to Mr. Sumpkins for a shoe shop for 4 Dollars per month until I can do better... Doct. Badger is a putting you up some medicine and I wish you to be careful of your health.... We [are] exciting much about the army on the Potomac and I hope that [they] have got enough and will give up and all return home. J. O. [..?..] came home last week and returns today. He gave me a good account of you and William. He said that he did not know of either of you a drinking. Now Willie, the sound still rings in my ears, the words that you uttered on your leaving for Goshen, Pa I will be a good boy. You cannot tell how these words still comfort me when I lie down at night and think about my only son. But I have that confidence in you that you will do all that you said on that painful day that you left... Minerva says that she would go on foot 10 miles to carry you some good bread and butter...Wally does not take very well here since he backed out as a soldier. Please write as soon as you can. Yours &c., S. H. Judkins |
