Hirabumi Ito was a Japanese politician, best known as the first Prime Minister of Japan. He was part of a delegation of statesmen responsible for dictating policy during the Meiji era. He visited the United States in the early 1870s to study Western currency systems and was sent around the world as a vice-envoy extraordinary as part of the Iwakura Mission. |
