Description |
B/W photograph of South Main Street, South Bend, Indiana. The reverse of this image reads: "This picture on South Main Street was taken from Monroe [Street] looking north and showing only the west side of the street for about one block. The first house, a two-story brick, was occupied in a very early day by James Jackson, a Negro barber whose family was one of the most respected colored families in the city. Later it was purchased by F.C. Raff who with his wife and daughter lived in the house for many years. The next house was built and occupied for years by Jonathan P. Creed, a well known lawyer, and his family. The next two-story frame house was occupied by the Meyer family. The next was a two-story, almost square frame house and was occupied by Miss Jennie Betts, one of South Bend's early school teachers, and her mother." 1894 |
