B/W image scanned from a negative of Oliver Chilled Plow Works employees working in a field that James and J.D. Oliver allowed their employees to plant their own crops to supplement each family's groceries. This field is probably north of Sample Street and east of Walnut Street. The steeples of Saint Casimir's Catholic Church can be see in the background of the photograph. Oliver employees also used this planting field during World War 1 to plant victory gardens. J.D. Oliver would offer cash prizes to the employee who grew the most crops of the largest vegetable. 1900 ca. |
