Provenance |
A note reads, "from the home of Schuyler Colfax. Presented to Colfax by President Lincoln, when Colfax was the chairman of the Ways and Means Committee in the House of Representatives. Presented to the Northern Indiana Historical Society by Mrs. Williamson of Goshen, Indiana through the courtesy of Howard C. Geiger." However, Colfax never served on the House Committee on Ways and Means. He was chair of the Committee on Post Office and Post Roads from 1859-1863 during Lincoln's presidency; it is likely the wrong committeee was cited. |
